The Louth branch of national housing union CATU (Community Action Tenants’ Union) held their first housing support workshop in the Redeemer Family Resource Centre, Dundalk on Saturday Jue 14th. The union, which is structured in similar ways to a workplace union, provided the space as an outreach to the public and to each more than just their current members. Those in attendance were able to learn about their rights as tenants (whether in private rental, social housing or emergency accommodation), as well as get an idea of the security that joining a housing union like CATU can provide.

The union is open for anyone to join, including mortgage holders, as long as you in no way profit through housing (EG you are a landlord). Members can sign up for as little as €5 a month through the CATU website, and from there you will be put in touch will your local group. As a union member, you are part of a community who will help and aid each other in times of wrongful and illegal evictions, unfair withholding of deposits by landlords or estate agents, and simply when your rights are not being met because of poor living conditions.
