Like all parties, Sinn Féin Louth have began to consider their next general election strategy. Many anticipated the return of current TD, Ruairí Ó Murchú, but it was unknown who might replace Imelda Munster.

Late Wednesday night the party announced via Facebook that Drogheda born Councillor Joanna Byrne would be joining Mr Ó Murchú on the campaign trail.

Earlier in the week Journalist Alison Comyn announced that she would contest the next general election also, as the Louth Fianna Fáil candidate.

The general election has yet to be announced, but many believe it will be sooner rather than later. Earlier this year Taoiseach Simon Harris had stipulated the current coalition government will be running its full term, and a general election would not be called until early 2025.

However, there is mounting pressure from the public who want change sooner, to set a date before the year is out. On top of this, there are growing calls within Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil by members who believe an early election could work in the favour. Only time will tell.
