SOSAD - Save Our Sons and Daughters, is a small local charity with a large purpose: Suicide intervention and postvention.
What this means in real terms is that the organisation sets out to reduce rates of suicide through action - by providing real, practical and free support to anyone in the community that needs it. These services include: One-on-one counselling, including counselling for those bereaved through suicide, a 24-7 phone line, and a part time texting service.
Since 2007, SOSAD has supported not only those who need it, but also their families and friends. First opening their doors in Drogheda, they soon extended and opened offices in Dundalk, Cavan, Meath, Monaghan and Laois.
SOSAD receive no state funding, and rely heavily on the generosity of donations from the community and businesses to keep their doors open. The charity is largely ran by trained volunteers.
This September 10th as part of World Suicide Prevention Day, SOSAD Dundalk will open their doors to the general public for a coffee morning. Those who attend can paint a stone in honour of a loved one passed. So if you wish to pop in and check out what SOSAD do and have a look around, all are welcome. Their premises is a small blue building at 49 Jocelyn Street, Dundalk - A91 TE26.
