The counties of Meath and Louth are in mourning, after the body of a teen has been recovered following a fatal swimming incident.

The boy named locally as 15-year-old Kofi Owusu, was taken from the water shortly after 9.30pm. He had been reported missing in the water over three hours before. Both the Irish Coast Guard Rescue 116 helicopter and the Drogheda Coast Guard Unit were quick to respond. The young man lived in the Blackrock area, but was with friends enjoying the summer day under the footbridge near Laytown Beach when tragedy struck.

Gardaí have asked that footage of the incident, apparently shared online, is taken down in respect of the victims family and friends.

His body was taken to Our Lady's Hospital in Navan, where a post-mortem examination will be carried out.

Our deepest condolences are with Kofi Owusu's loved ones at this time.
